Hand sewn yogi 夜着 (large kimono-shaped quilt used during the Edo and Meiji era). Kaimaki 掻巻 (sleeved quilt). This piece is the outer shell; the interior and batting have been removed. Wear is consistent with age and use and sun fading on the back.
This piece is specifically e-gasuri (picture kasuri) as the image created is recognizable. This process was first practiced in the 12th Century. This yogi pattern is of the character of "kotobuki" good luck and long-tailed tortise, which is a symbol of longevity.
