Takashima Oiko was a mythical strong peasant girl depicted in this woodblock print series called "A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures" by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Charming illustration from the tale of the beautiful young peasant girl, Takashima Oiko. As a result of her hard labor around her family farm, she was exceptionally strong.  One day while retriving water from the the river Saeki Urinaga, a wrestler saw her and decided to acost her.  As he reached for her breast she traped his arm under hers and just kept walking, dragging the wrestler behind her.  In the tale she took him home and taught him to be a better man and a better wrestler.  Diptych mounted on card.
