Antique leather firefighter's hanten 半纏 (heavier weight coat made popular in the 18th century).
Features katazome stencil resist dying process, using the smoke of pine needles to produce komon and striped patterns. The bottom of the hanten has a beautifully resist-dyed waterwheel pattern, with a block of kakuji text on the upper back.
Leather fire coats were worn by or donated to leaders of volunteer firefighters by wealthier merchants.
