Helicopter and Ship Niko Niko Gasuri Textile Fragment | Japanese Cotton

E-gasuri panel. This piece of fabric has a depiction of a helicopter and ship.  A fragment of fabric  created with niko niko gasuri  - a Kasuri (絣), a Japanese ikat technique that uses threads that are stencil dyed before weaving to create the pattern.

Kasuri 絣 is the Japanese style of ikat, where the threads of the material are resist-dyed before being woven. This piece is specifically e-gasuri (picture kasuri) as the image created is recognizable. This process was first practiced in the 12th Century.
