Hand painted Ema left at Shinto or Buddhist shrines for the deities to hear prayers. This ema is a representation of a Buddhist sutra scroll.
Inscribed on the back: " Meiji 16 - Hitsujinotsuki Kichijitsu Kehaku -Go Dou Kenritsu - Ono Chuemon" this ema was an offering by Mr Ono to Celebrate the new temple 1883 (year of the sheep). There is also a bit of the kannon sutra on the back in a much lighter hand.
