Antique Japanese Sake Cup Haiku Scroll

Antique Japanese Sake Cup Haiku Scroll

An antique Japanese hanging wall scroll that features a famous haiku by the Zen Buddhist & poet, Ryokan. When Ryokan visited the house of his old friend, Harada Kasai (1763-1827), he found that Kasai had moved and what was left was an empty lot with a solitary plum tree sitting in it. In the past the two of them would float falling plum petals in their sake, compose waka poetry, and enjoy the arts. A monument to this poem has been erected at Kasai's old home in Magiyama, Niigata Prefecuture.

[Haiku]

Long ago, I often drank sake at this house;
now only the earth
Covered with plum blossoms.

<Ryokan Taigu (1758-1831) Japanese Poet>

Ryokan Taigu was a quiet and unconventional Soto Zen Buddhist Monk who lived much of his life as a hermit. Ryokan is remembered for his poetry and calligraphy, which present the essence of Zen life.
